The IPFS-based feature will introduce people to the advanced benefits of the blockchain, says MEW CEO Hemachandra
The free and client-side open source interface for generating crypto wallets My Ethereum Wallet (MEW) announced the introduction of a new feature called „Host Your Own Site“. It is intended to allow hosting of own decentralized websites.
This allows users to publish virtually uncensored content to domains such as .crypto and .eth via IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) support.
The new feature allows users to interact directly with the blockchain while retaining full control over personal keys. Using Smart Contracts, they can own the domain as an asset in the Ethereum blockchain and control the content to be published. The IPFS-based decentralized network of peer-to-peer computers enables the storage and sharing of data in distributed file systems. These sites are linked to Ethereum-based domain name services such as Unstoppable Domains or ENS.
Unstoppable Domains recently partnered with MEW to launch dBlogs, which allows users to register and manage decentralized and censorship-free domains through a new MEW app.
The domains will be priced at $40 for a one-year registration period with no renewal fees. „Everyone in the world deserves to be able to publish online, conduct transactions and communicate without fear of censorship,“ said Unstoppable Domains CEO Brad Kam.
MEW CEO Kosala Hemachandra explains the exact considerations behind the new feature: „MEW’s ‚Host Your Own Site‘ feature solves this problem by making the process of publishing content to a decentralized domain intuitive and easy for everyone,“ Hemachandra said. „Wallets no longer need to be used only for payments.“
Hemachandra noted that the goal and potential of a crypto domain was not known to many investors. The new feature would allow more advanced blockchain capabilities to be explored, he said. In addition, MEW can benefit from the need for freedom of speech. „At the same time we want to enable freedom of speech,“ Hemachandra said.
However, the technology is still in its proverbial infancy and has some limitations, Hemachandra explained. For the time being, the function can only be used in conjunction with static websites, so content management systems like WordPress would lack the necessary compatibility for the time being.
„Therefore services like WordPress need a backend server to work. Therefore reason – such servers do not exist in the distributed world – there is no way to fully run for example WordPress“, he explained. Although it is unlikely that a solution to the problem will be found soon, „nothing is impossible“, as the CEO emphasized in his statement.
