Currently supported cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dash
Anyone in possession of cryptocurrencies can now pay for a variety of goods and services in Austria with tokens.
This was made possible by a cooperation between the payment service provider Salamantex and A1 Payment, one of the largest telecommunications companies in the country. Krypton users can now pay with cryptocurrencies at more than 2500 merchants.
This news was first announced by Salamantex on July 2. At the time of writing this article, the payment system supported the three tokens Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dash.
„Sellers can thus accept cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Dash instead of cash or credit cards, but receive the amount in euros, as they are used to,“ the press release says.
The system was tested for several months in selected A1 shops across the country.
The change came in response to a significant change of perspective in the country regarding cryptocurrencies, after the government and retailers had urged the population to switch to cashless payments.
According to Markus Pejacsevich, Chief Operating Officer of Salamantex, the company’s goal is to make payments with digital currencies at the checkout as natural as paying with a credit card has been in the last decades.
„With A1, we have a partner for the Austria-wide implementation who is just as convinced as we are of this payment system of the future and is working towards making payment with digital assets accessible to the broad masses. The acceptance of cryptocurrencies opens up new, financially strong customer groups and enables merchants to position themselves as pioneers in their industry,“ says Pejacsevich.
Markus Schreiber, Head of A1 Business Marketing, believes that Salamantex is the ideal partner to spread digital payments nationwide.
„With the integration of Salamantex’s solution, we can now also include cryptocurrencies as a payment option in our range of services. Security and reliability were top priorities both in the selection of our partner and during the integration process,“ Schreiber explained.
This cryptocurrencies payment software developed by Salamantex is to be integrated into existing payment processes. The partnerships with A1, Ingenico and Concar enable the introduction of these services in Austria and, in the future, in neighbouring countries.
A few months ago, Ingenico presented Salamantex’s first POS terminal with integrated crypto payment software at the EuroShop trade fair in Germany.
Further cooperations with other payment service providers are already in progress.
